Reboot
Robotics

Reboot Robotics is a faith-based competitive robotics program that introduces STEM to home-schooled children. Teams are created to design and build their own robot to solve complex challenges against other teams’ robots. Students learn team building, critical thinking, and problem-solving for their future success.

Problem

Reboot Robotics wants to increase membership and newsletter subscribers. Members are having difficulty finding important resources, and the site overall feels dated and unorganized.

Goals

Reboot Robotics needs a visual refresh as well as some reorganizing and prioritizing of content to drive membership up and increase newsletter subscribers.

Competitor research

Competitor research

I took some time to do a bit of secondary research on other robotic groups.

The research really didn’t return many consistent findings.

It felt like other robotics groups are looking to figure out their site goals as well.

Reconfiguring the Sitemap

the Sitemap

Next step I decided on what pages needed to be added, consolidated, and shifted in order.

I suggested Programs move more to the "front" of the site, making the recruitment of members more present.

Events is one of the more resourced sections, so making it its own section and placing it front and center on the navigation was a must.

I also recommended consolidating any photo galleries, news stories and past Newsletters to one section labeled Media. Reboot opted to remove the image galleries and news articles until more are acquired. Newsletters was then given their own section.

Rewiring the site

Rewiring
the site

The audit consisted of ADA testing, reviewing the site hierarchy, and suggestions for content arrangement and design.

Below are a few callouts that I think greatly improved the site.

Home page

Home page rewired

WHAT WE DO and OUR VISION are both well written but are similar in content.

The homepage has a lot of content, leaving you unmotivated to click the CTA to go to the pages they are talking about.

Sections WHAT WE DO and OUR VISION have similar content.

I recommended leaving WHAT WE DO; it's a great summary of Reboot Robotics. Placing OUR VISION on the About page, it complements the content in that section.

Navigation

Navigation

The navigation made it difficult to locate programs, program resources, and the event schedule. A Donate CTA had a redundant Donate link right under it.

Navigation rewired

During our initial call, Reboot Robotics mentioned users had difficulty finding information regarding the programs and program resources.

I suggested making Programs a separate page. Resources stayed under Programs to streamline the navigation. In addition, both new and regular users associate the resources with the programs.

Donate was removed from the navigation, leaving the Donate CTA because it stands out more.

Mobile

Mobile rewired

The mobile header design was lacking a flow and all the content was fighting for equal space.

I balanced out the layout to make it more readable and flow to the Donate CTA.

The site used a lot of imagery for its backgrounds, making content very hard to read and distracting at times.

I recommended removing the background images to give the site a cleaner, contemporary look. The solid color backgrounds puts more focus on the photos throughout the site as well makes the content easier to read.

Results

While I don't have exact percentages, I was informed that users are finding a the redesign much easier to access and membership has increased!

Final thoughts

Reboot Robotics is a great program that teaches kids hands-on the value of teamwork, friendly competition, and the rewards of problem-solving. I thoroughly enjoyed helping Reboot Robotics grow and would love to keep working with them in the future.
